The Commission was founded in February 1978 and became incorporated with the state of Colorado on November 24, 1978. It was awarded 501 c(3) status in August 1988.

Today it is a group of local leaders working on partnering with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. The 17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals.

Today, progress is being made in many places, but, overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. 2020 needs to usher in a decade of ambitious action to deliver the Goals by 2030.

Beginning in June 2020 the Executive Director and Board of Directors have partnered up to align the work that will be done to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.  This is a different direction from the past and one that all are excited about to play our part in local, state, national, and world change.
